5 Things a Missionary would tell You over Coffee

The act of “coffee-ing” has become a verb that symbolizes connection. It’s in this space that missionaries often find themselves sharing experiences over steaming cups of java. In these shared moments over coffee, missionaries impart more than just insights into faith; they offer a window to what God is doing through the nations. Through stories of learning language and cultural immersion, their experiences challenge and encourage us that we are all on mission in God’s Kingdom. So, pull up a chair, grab a mug, and hypothetically listen to the words a missionary would offer you over coffee…

1. God is always working.

You may not always see it upfront, but I’m here to tell you God’s always at work. Amidst challenges and uncertainties, I’ve experienced moments that remind me of His presence. People live in North America’s gateway cities that have come from unreached people groups, far from a relationship with God, and they are awakening to the gospel of Jesus…just by hearing the good news for the first time. (Romans 8:28)

2. Think long-term.

It is simple: think beyond the immediate. Like brewing the perfect cup of coffee takes time, the discipleship journey takes patience. The impact of our work might not be immediate, but with perseverance, we are witnessing lives transformed and communities changed for Jesus Christ. (Galatians 6:9)

3. Pray for us.

Can I be honest with you? We need your prayers. It’s like you’re holding a piece of our mission in your hands. Your prayers bridge the gap between us and the people and places we serve. When you pray for us, it’s a reminder that we’re not alone in this God-sized endeavor. (Colossians 4:2)

4. We are not superheroes.

I am no superhero. Like anyone else, I face doubts, struggles, and tough days. It’s important to acknowledge our humanity and be honest about our vulnerabilities. We worry about finances. In embracing our imperfections, we rely solely on the Lord’s strength, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, when opportunities arise, we share the gospel. You can, too 🙂. (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)

5. Jesus is worth it.

When we sit down over coffee, I’m not just sharing my stories; I’m inviting you to join me in witnessing what we have in common: the belief in the saving and transforming power of Jesus. He is worth it. He is in every valley with us and every victory, and to him be the glory, honor, and praise. (Philippians 3:8)

Engaging in a “coffee-ing” session with a missionary goes beyond mere dialogue. It’s an opportunity to partake in a rich blend of wisdom brewed from their personal encounters with faith, adversity, and victory made possible by the power of the Holy Spirit. With each sip, we’re invited, as the body of Christ, to join them on their endeavor, and in return, they encourage us to be on mission wherever God has placed us.

“I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 1:6
