Hope in Ramadan: One Missionary’s Story
Read below as a Global Gates missionary who grew up Muslim offers insight into Ramadan through the lens of both lived experience and faith transformation.
1. What was your experience of Ramadan before you followed Jesus?
Before I followed Jesus, Ramadan was a very serious and emotional season for me. It was a time of fasting, long prayers, and trying to become acceptable to God. I truly wanted forgiveness, peace, and assurance that my sins were forgiven. Yet, even while praying and fasting, I carried an inner burden. I hoped God would accept me, but I never knew for sure. There was sincerity, but also fear and uncertainty. Looking back, I realize I was searching for grace, but I did not yet know where true grace could be found. Honestly, I rarely observed fasting because I could not restrain myself from eating for the entire day.
2. Have you seen spiritual openness or movement toward Jesus increase during Ramadan?
Yes, very much. Ramadan is one of the most spiritually sensitive times for Muslims. People think more about God, repentance, forgiveness, and the afterlife. Many become more open to reading Scripture and asking spiritual questions. I have seen many Muslims begin reading the Injil (Gospel) during Ramadan and encounter Jesus personally. Some experience dreams, others deep conviction, and many start asking, “How can I truly know God?” This creates a natural opportunity to share who Jesus truly is.
3. What are meaningful ways Christians can engage Muslim friends during Ramadan?
First, pray intentionally for your Muslim friends by name. Ask God to reveal Jesus to them. Second, show genuine love and respect—simple gestures like wishing them a peaceful Ramadan or asking about their fasting can open doors. Third, listen to their questions and struggles without arguing. Fourth, gently share stories about Jesus—especially His compassion, forgiveness, and sacrifice. Offering to read a Gospel story together can be very powerful. Most importantly, love them well and trust the Holy Spirit to work.
4. What gives you the most hope when you think about Muslims encountering Jesus?
What gives me the most hope is my own story. I did not find Jesus because I was better or smarter—Jesus lovingly revealed Himself to me. The same Jesus is still seeking Muslims today. I continue to hear testimonies of Muslims meeting Jesus through dreams, Scripture, and loving Christians. This reminds me that salvation is God’s work. Jesus is faithfully drawing people to Himself, and nothing can stop what He is doing.
